Talk of the Town

Can’t stop obsessing over Riverdale? We get it. Listen up as the super-tight crew from the CW his chats about confidence, relationships, and their iconic characters.

How has Betty rubbed off on you?

“She has a real kindness and patience with people, whereas I’m not really a people person. I’ve had social anxiety forever—I don’t thrive in social or party settings. Betty doesn’t either, but she’s more inclined to go out and do things. I’d rather stay home and read a book!”

Has playing her made you more
game to try new things?

“Now that I’m 2I, there’s a voice in the back of my head that says, ‘Hey, you’re 2I now—go have fun!’ I listen to that voice when I stay up later than I should if I have work the next day or when I go out with friends. I know my limits—there’s a difference between not wanting to go out because I’m genuinely uncomfortable or not wanting to because I’m a little anxious. And there’s power in knowing that whatever situation you’re in, if you hate it and you’re not having fun, you can leave. My castmates have been a good influence on my social life—they’ve encouraged me to get out of my little bubble, and I’m grateful for that.”

You choose not to comment much about your love life. Is that ever a challenge?

“Every time someone asks me about it, I make a decision then and there about whether I’m comfortable. It’s not like I’m in some kind of contract, but I’m not in the place where I want to talk about it, and that’s totally fine. It’s called a private life for a reason—it’s mine, and it’s special and sacred. My relationships are between me and whomever I’m with, not between me and the world.”

The Cast on One Another…

On Camila:

LILI: “Cami and I vibe really well with each other. We’re going to be roommates!”

KJ: “She doesn’t take herself too seriously. It’s good to be around someone who’s stress-free.”

ASHLEIGH: “She inspires me. I admire her fearlessness.”

On Lili:

KJ: “She’s real, and I love that she doesn’t care what anybody thinks about her.”

CAMILA: “She’s the person I vent to. This life is very new for both of us, and we figure situations out together.”

ASHLEIGH: “She’s this gorgeous human who will make some hilarious fart joke and it’s like, ‘Where did that come from?!?”

CASEY: “My sister from another mister.”

On Cole:

KJ: “He’s the one I go to for advice. And for a laugh!”

LILI: “He’s so smart. We work really well with each other.”

ASHLEIGH: “He’s the funniest, most cynical person. I love having long thoughtful conversations with him—it’s hard not to!”

CAMILA: “He’s the wise one who’s been through all of this already.”

On KJ:

MADELAINE: “He’s so down-to-earth and humble—a really good influence.”

COLE: “We became fast friends. We try to keep everyone laughing on set.”

CAMILA: “He has such a goofy energy, and he brings that out in all of us.”

On Madelaine:

KJ: “She’s one of the hardest-working people on set and never complains.”

ASHLEIGH: “Such a fierce, loyal friend.”

CAMILA: “She’s very business savvy but also knows how to separate the work from who she is.”

On Ashleigh:

LILI: “Sh’es super-chill and is always singing!”

CASEY: “A rock star. I love going to karaoke with her.”

CAMILA: “She’s like a mom to me. She’s the most nurturing person on set.”

On Casey:

KJ: “He’s a legend. When you hang out with him, you forget about work.”

CAMILA: “We call each other our ‘down bitch. When I want to go out, he’s down.”

LILI: “My bud! We bonded over our Midwestern roots.”

What They’d Like to See…

“I think Veronica and Reggie [Charles Melton] would be good together. He’s the only other person I could see her with. Theres something there—they’re both very strong-willed, so I think they’d be a good match.” -Camila

“I’d love to see a Riverdale take on the movie Brick. I think our show is most effective when we ground it in film noir. Brick deals with similar issues as Riverdale and puts film noir in a high school setting.” -Cole

“I’d like to see Betty’s happiness. As much as people enjoy the drama, I think they get closure when they see characters experiencing joy. The amount of trauma Betty goes through, we’ve never really seen her joyful, and I’d want to show that eventually.” -Lili

“After the first season, I wanted to challenge myself. I was hoping for Archie to get a little bit darker—to see a darker side of him. I’m so glad the writers have done
that and allowed me to go a little bit deeper.” -KJ
